Sustainable future of the automotive industry
The automotive industry is undergoing an unprecedented transformation. Among the main objectives of this change, the commitment to sustainability stands out. The study “Advancing the paths of decarbonization of the Brazilian market” points to an expected investment of R$ 130 billion in the coming years to support this transition process.
In this article, we analyze how sustainability in the automotive sector is redefining strategies, products and processes. Check out the next topics!
Energy efficiency: the engine of transformation. We are living a decisive moment in the history of mobility.
Fleet electrification is advancing rapidly, driven by global emission reduction targets. The Paris Agreement, for example, sets a target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and requires the automotive sector to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. For this, new technologies have been applied with focus on energy efficiency and lower environmental impact.
Hybrid vehicles, which combine combustion engines with electric propulsion, represent an important step in this transition. The fully electric models gain space by offering zero emission of pollutants in use. The charging infrastructure also advances with the creation of larger and more efficient networks of electric stations, fundamental for the popularization of electric vehicles. In addition, batteries are more efficient, with higher energy density, lower cost and more sustainable manufacturing processes – an essential factor to enable this new reality.
Regulations and incentives: catalysts for change
The automotive industry today deals with increasingly stringent environmental standards. An example is the Proconve (Program for the Control of Air Pollution by Motor Vehicles), which establishes progressive emission limits in Brazil.
These regulations, combined with tax and tax incentives, encourage the development of cleaner solutions. Among them, the IPI reduction for electric and hybrid vehicles stands out – which can be up to 70% lower compared to combustion vehicles.
International experiences reinforce the importance of well-structured public policies. In Norway, for example, more than 88% of cars sold in 2024 were electric. Success is a direct result of incentives for sustainable vehicles and rising taxes on fossil fuel-powered models.
Circular economy: rethinking the vehicle life cycle
The adoption of the circular economy is also on the agenda. The automotive industry is starting to rethink the entire vehicle life cycle – from raw material extraction to final disposal. Battery recycling, in particular, represents one of the biggest challenges and opportunities.
Other sustainable practices include the use of recyclable materials in production and technologies that reduce water and energy consumption in factories. All this shows that it is possible to combine innovation, performance and environmental responsibility.
